The eastern side of Ross River lies in stark contrast to the bustling Townsville on its western banks. South of the Ross River, the coast becomes increasingly protected by Cape Cleveland, and soon mangrove-covered tidal flats dominate the shore. The first 5 km do, however, receive sufficient low wave energy to maintain two low, irregular beach ridges and beaches, both fronted by wide tidal flats. Sandfly Creek Beach (865) lies immediately to the east and consists of a similar low, low energy beach ridge fronted by sandy tidal flats up to 400 m wide. Sandfly Creek forms the eastern boundary, beyond which are 20 km of mangrove-fringed shore, all the way to Launs Beach at the base of Cape Cleveland.
