Beach Q 38 commences at 300 m wide Van Diemen Inlet and trends northeast for 18.5 km, past Top Dam stockyard, to 4 km south of Duck Creek, where beach Q 39 has been building southward along the former northern end of the beach. The long beach is part of a low barrier that narrows to a few hundred metres in the centre, widening to either end as 2-3 km wide splays of beach ridges terminating in spits. The beach is fronted by ridged sand flats that also widen towards the creek and narrow to 200 m in the centre. There is vehicle access to the coast at Top Dam. Beach Q 39 is a low 3.8 km long beach ridge that extends from the mouth of Duck Creek southwards to where it overlaps the northern end of beach Q 38. The beach is backed by a meandering mangrove-lined deflected tidal creek, and fronted by migratory sand waves that are moving sediment to the south.
